I found the true beauty of Bali is in the hearts of its people, in the land, both cultivated and wild, and in the hospitality so freely offered its guests. Continue reading

Habitat Global Village INDONESIA | Yogyakarta
We would spend the next week volunteering with our Habitat for Humanity Australia Global Village Team, partnering with Habitat Indonesia, helping to construct a home for a deserving family in need, an elderly couple who, combined, earned the equivalent of $93USD per month as farm workers. Thanks to Habitat, they will be able to live out their final years with dignity, eventually passing the home to one of their sons and his family. Continue reading
INDONESIA | Yogyakarta, The City You Never Heard Of
First there was the book, then the movie. Eat, Pray, Love. Thanks Hollywood: now nearly everyone has fantasized about falling in love in Bali. But how many of them have heard of Yogyakarta, pronounced, JOGE-Ja-karta? Very few I bet. Let’s change that. Continue reading
MALAYSIA | Chilling in Hot Kuala Lumpur
I’m always game to visit a new place, and I’d never been to Malaysia. On my way to Indonesia, I decided to book my roundtrip airfare to/from the USA through Kuala Lumpur, aka KL. Most cities are easy to explore for a few days, and that’s exactly what my friend and I did, with very little pre-planned. If you have a few extra days, it’s a nice strategy to begin to get over the jet lag induced by crossing 12 time zones. Continue reading

You’ve probably heard of Puerto Vallarta—keep heading southeast along the coast. Eventually you’ll hit another city you’ve probably heard of—Acapulco. Keep going and just … Continue reading

Day five. It’s Friday. Hard to believe our last day of work has arrived and the build is coming to a close. Habitat Global Village, MEXICO | Puerto Escondido – Work Day 4
Usually by the time Global Village teams get to day four, we are all feeling the effects of doing jobs that we are unaccustomed to. After the shorter workday on Wednesday and a break for some fun, Thursday tends to be the longest and often most difficult day of work. That should have been the … Continue reading
Habitat Global Village, MEXICO | Puerto Escondido – Work Day 3
Day three often signals a midweek break, in that we usually end the work day a bit early to participate in a cultural activity, usually relating to the community. In our case we broke for lunch and Arlet and Hilda, another future homeowner in the group, showed us how to make tlayudas, which are basically … Continue reading
Habitat Global Village, MEXICO | Puerto Escondido – Work Day 2
Day two and the same jobs continue: moving and laying bricks, sifting sand and mixing mortar and our newest task, cutting and bending rebar. The house will have a bathroom, kitchen, two bedrooms and a dining and living area inside, and a small front porch on the outside. In total about 50 square meters or … Continue reading
