CROATIA | 4 Friends in Rovinj & Beyond

…continued from CROATIA | 4 Friends in Istria & Beyond

Day 7 | From Pula to Rovinj

After a quick lunch, we loaded into the car again for a less-than-an-hour drive to perhaps Istria’s most beautiful town, Rovinj, Croatia’s “Little Venice.” Happily, we spent three nights here and could have stayed longer.

There is 24-hour parking at the marina. Most of Rovinj’s cobblestoned streets are pedestrian-only, so once you ditch the car you are free to explore on foot (and bike). We stayed at the wonderful Monterosso Old Town Apartments [Bregovita 12]. It was a little tricky finding the building, but you very quickly get oriented on foot.

That evening we walked up the hill to the heart of historic Rovinj to see the Church of St. Euphemia and the sunset. Built in the early 18th century, the church contains St. Eupemia’s relics, Gothic statues, and paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries. There are so many places to grab a drink and some food on the literal water’s edge. Welcome to paradise!

DAY 8 | Two Tastes of Istria—Wine and Truffles

Today was all about the two things Istria is famous for, wine and truffles. We booked a private driver (who picked us up in a Mercedes!) and took us on a tour of the region’s finest wineries. Our favorite was the tour and tasting at Kabola Vineyard which included a charcuterie-style lunch. We also enjoyed the bubbles at Cattunar.

On the way back our guide offered to take us to another of the small hill towns to wander, shop, and buy everything truffle. Grožnjan is a small artist haven and is known for its truffles. We particularly liked the products at Natura Tartufi.

I highly recommend the food at the fast-casual Fish House.

DAY 9 | Exploring Rovinj

We spent our last full day immersing ourselves in all things Rovinj. Renting bikes is a great way to explore the seaside parks! We rented them and did a self-guided tour. Paths are well marked. Ask at the rental shop and they’ll point you in the right direction. Wear your swimsuit under your clothing and bring a towel and water bottle and you’re all set!

There are many pretty things to buy, but we particularly liked the handmade pearl jewelry at Pelegrina [Vladimira Svalbe 32].

Our favorite meal was at Bookeria.

My single most favorite moment of the entire trip happened on the late-night walk back to our apartment that evening. Two musicians camped out on the street were playing music so beautiful, it brought tears to our eyes. We sat and listened until they were finished, tossing a few euros their way. It was magical.

On to SLOVENIA
