Having never been to Bolivia, I figured building houses alongside families in need of affordable shelter was a great reason to get me there. This would be my second time leading a team for The Fuller Center for Housing, also in South America. I had a rather large team, full of experienced builders and travelers. I’m grateful for that because Bolivia posed many challenges. I have no regrets, but also no plans to return. The country is full of wonderful things to see and do and kind people to meet.
You can read all about the amazing experiences and my advice on visiting La Paz, Lake Titicaca and Salar de Uyuni, the Bolivian Salt Flats. Each place holds wonderful memories for me and is worth the journey. If you are not an experienced traveler, be prepared that you may find traveling to, from and in Bolivia to be frustrating. Take deep breaths, draw strength from the mountains and be patient. I believe you will be rewarded.
To future team leaders: my entire volunteer team was absolutely amazing and each of them really enjoyed the build, despite the challenges with altitude sickness and tummy bugs. It brought me such joy to be with them. There is a great need for affordable and decent housing in Bolivia and I pray that organizations like The Fuller Center can help meet those needs.
Here are some photos from our build!
